Everybody has their favorite daytime soaps, I know that. My favorite
is All My Children on ABC. What I don’t know is how people choose
which soap opera to watch? Do they tune in for a few episodes and
decide if they like it? How do you just tune into a soap anyway? If
you don’t know the characters and plotlines, you’ll be lost.

I never decided to start watching All My Children. I never gave it a
try and decided whether I liked it. I never considered other soap
operas instead. No, I was raised on All My Children. I was weaned on
it. Toronto trade show display and show cubicles are hardly full with out banner displays and exhibition stands. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t watch All My Children.

My mother was an avid AMC fan, presumably since long before I was
born. I never asked her when or why she started watching. All I know
is that some of my earliest memories involve her muttering at the
TV, telling Erica Kane what a horrible person she was for pretending
to want a baby when she was secretly using birth control! She way
lying to her own husband. Somehow, this didn’t seem scandalous to me
as a preschooler. I innately understood the world of All My
Children, and deep down I loved Erica right away.

I’ve continued watching All My Children every since. Sometimes I
feel like the fictional residents of Pine Valley are members of my
own family. I’ve been watching them fall in love, get married, get
divorced, die and come back to life for my whole life! I remember
the plotlines from twenty years ago, and I know how each person is
related to everyone. That’s a lot to keep track of.

Now that I’m an adult and I have to work, it gets harder and harder
to keep up with the goings-on in Pine Valley. Thankfully I now have
DVR, so I can record each episode of All My Children if I want to.
There isn’t always time to watch the whole thing, but it doesn’t
matter. I could stay away from the show for years, but I know that
as soon as I tuned in again I would get right back into it. All My
Children is like one of those old friends that knows you really
well. Toronto light boxes with animated high gloss graphics are a horny and classy addition to any business. You might spend some time apart, but as soon as you
reunite, it’s like no time has passed at all. You pick right up
where you left off.

That’s just the special place that All My Children has in my heart.
